Are you eligible for a student visa?

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student at an Australian educational institution and receive written confirmation of this enrollment (mainly online courses are not eligible).
  • You must be able to prove that you actually intend to complete the relevant course of study in Australia.
  • Have the required level of English language proficiency unless you are exempt.
  • While studying (undergraduate), you must not work more than 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in progress.
  • Have overseas student insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Australia.
  • Have enough funds for the cost of return plane tickets, tuition fees and living expenses in Australia, as well as the necessary expenses for any family members with you.

Genuine student with the intention of temporary stay in Australia:

All applicants for a student visa must show they are coming to Australia temporarily to gain a quality education. The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is not intended to exclude students who, after studying in Australia, develop skills Australia needs and who then go on to apply for permanent residence.

A satisfying GTE depends on:

  • Your personal circumstances in the country of origin
  • Your motivations for returning to your country of origin
  • The connection of the chosen field of study with your future plans
  • Your immigration history
  • Your educational and employment history and
  • Any other matter at the discretion of the case officer

Financial capacities:

  • The level of funds required and the evidence required depends on the passport country of the applicant and the institution providing the course.
  • Evidence that their spouse/de facto partner or parents have a specified annual income or
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover travel costs, the first 12 months’ living costs, and the first annual course fee for themselves and school fees for each family applicant who is a child of school-age or
  • Proof of funds to cover travel costs, course /school fees, and living costs on a pro rata basis for themselves and each family applicant where the period of stay is less than 12 months.

Conditions for working with a student visa:

  • It is not allowed to do student work until the beginning of the study period at the university.
  • After starting the course, you and your family members can work up to 40 hours every two weeks.
  • During breaks between semesters and summer vacation, you and your family members can work unlimited hours.
  • Masters (research) or PhD students can work unlimited hours after the start of the academic semester.
  • The family members of Masters (research) or PhD students can work unlimited hours after the start of the academic semester.

Mandatory conditions when you are granted a student visa:

    • Enrolment in the course, subject to satisfactory class attendance and academic progress
    • Enrolled in an approved course with (CRICOS) Australia
    • The possibility of student visa cancellation by the immigration officer in case of your non-attendance or progress in the study course
